Details of the case

Manship was sentenced to 19 years in prison with an extended licence period of eight years for a series of horrific child sexual abuse offences.

The offences included making indecent photographs of a child, distributing indecent photographs of a child, taking indecent photographs of a child, sexual assault of a child under 13, and rape of a child under 13.

Mark Manship was caught after exchanging indecent images of child abuse and explicit messages online. An individual with whom he shared these images was an undercover FBI agent, which led to Manship’s arrest in December 2020. One offence that he was later charged with dated back to 2011.

A forensic investigation of his electronic devices discovered hundreds of indecent images of children, as well as evidence of other sexual abuse offences for which he was eventually charged.

In addition to the prison sentence and extended licence, the judge also imposed a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), multiple restraining orders, and added Manship to the sex offenders register for life.

The investigating officer, DC Elizabeth Howell, said: “Mark Manship is a manipulative man who committed truly abhorrent crimes to fuel his own grotesque sexual desires.

“He took advantage of very young girls and shared his horrific abuse of one of them online – giving absolutely no thought to their wellbeing or the devastating long-term effects his crimes will have on them and their families.

“I’m very pleased they have been able to see him handed a significant prison sentence today.”

Supporting survivors with abuse claims in Bristol

At Lyons Solicitors, we specialise in abuse claims in Bristol and represent clients who have experienced sexual abuse, whether recent, or historic sexual abuse claims. We understand the emotional and psychological toll these experiences take, and we provide trauma-informed legal advice tailored to your situation.

We can help you explore your legal options, which may include:

Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA)

This government scheme compensates victims of violent crime, including child sexual abuse. You may still be eligible even if the perpetrator has not been convicted, provided the abuse has been reported to the police.

Civil claims against individuals

It may be possible to bring a claim for compensation against the abuser directly. A criminal conviction can strengthen the evidence in a civil claim.

Claims against institutions

If the abuse occurred in a setting such as a school, religious group, care home or youth organisation, the institution may be held legally responsible for failing in its duty of care.

We work closely with counsellors, psychologists, and expert barristers to support every aspect of your case. Our aim is to help you move forward with clarity, dignity and a sense of control. Wherever possible, we act on a no-win, no-fee basis so that you are not burdened by financial risk when making a claim.

Though pursuing a claim cannot undo the trauma of sexual abuse, it can bring recognition, justice, and financial support to help with your recovery.
